Medieval Countries and Culture
In the predominantly mountainous valley dug by the Serchio river, countless medieval villages are perched where it is possible to perceive local traditions and culture.
Do not miss Barga, Coreglia Antelminelli, both with a 360 degree view of the Apuan Alps. Castelnuovo, historical capital of the Garfagnana, with the fortress of Ludovico Ariosto. All medieval villages that preserve liveliness and millenary traditions. The village of Castiglione Garfagnana and the Fortezza delle Verrucole in Camporgiano are also worth a visit. But the whole area is an immersion in history and nature
Along the road to the Grotta del Vento and the town of Vergemoli, it is possible to visit the Hermitage of Calomini set in the rock. In summer the hermitage can be visited every day, while in the rest of the year only on Sundays during Mass.
In these villages you can still find genuine and real hospitality, where the managers are the owners and there is the possibility of tasting typical flavours: the farinata, tortelli, cured meats and the infinite recipes based on chestnuts, such as polenta , the necci and castagnaccio.
