Bagni di Lucca is an ancient spa resort famous since Roman times.
The quality of its waters placed them among the top 5 spas in Europe from the 1400s to the end of the 19th century, including it in the 19th-century European Grand Tour.
This Municipality has various records, such as that of the oldest public gambling house in the world (first authorizations dating back to the 1400s, created to support free public care for the poor and beggars); that of the foundation of the Scout movement in Italy (in 1910), the first Italian electric public lighting through a revolutionary hydroelectric unit built in 1886.
Surely to visit are the ruins of the church “Al Santo” and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta of the beautiful village of Brandeglio which is located 640 meters above sea level.
One of the most inhabited fractions is Benabbio where there is a theater dating back to the mid-800 and the ruins of the castle of the Lupari family, of archaeological interest.
Fornoli is located on the plain of the river Lima, of ancient origins. There is the famous Chain Bridge, used as an inspiration for the Brooklin Bridge.
Granaiola is a mountain and holiday village from which to leave to visit the whole territory.
Casabasciana is a town of late Romanesque origin, the church is in Baroque style and there are many roads and walking paths, ancient fountains and panoramic points.
In Limano on the 1st of August, there is the “Festa in piazza Gave” with songs and dances in costume, an ancient tradition rediscovered.
Lucchio is a small medieval village perched on the mountain, one of the most characteristic medieval villages of Italy. Fleets of Japanese tourists come every year, thanks to some books written in their language over this incredible village.
Ponte a Serraglio is the hamlet that leads to the historic thermal baths, where the casino of 1839 is located.
San Cassiano di Controne is a village made up of eight small villages, called small villas: Campiglia, Cappella, Vizzata, Cembroni, Cocolaio, Livizzano, Chiesa.
Here is the museum center of San Cassiano that, in addition to the church full of early Christian low relief items of continuous study, houses a room used as a museum in which other works of various authors. Is home to the magnificent full-size wooden sculpture of a San Martin riding on Jacopo della Quercia. The only wooden work that has come to the present day of this sublime artist.
Montefegatesi is about 15 km from Bagni di Lucca, it is an ancient medieval village that belonged to the Duchy of Modena, with particular histories and traditions.
From here it seems that also Dante Alighieri has passed, who is said to have taken inspiration for some scenarios of the Divine Comedy just from the Orrido di Botri; the suggestive Canyon, today national park, located in this hamlet.
But there are still many places to visit in the town of Bagni di Lucca, a town rich in history that surprises us every time.
