One of the most mysterious and fascinating monuments of the whole province of Lucca is definitely the The Devil’s Bridge in Borgo a Mozzano, also called “della Maddalena”.
It is characterized by a unique structure composed of a large round arch flanked by three minor arches on one side and one on the other.
Legend tells that the builder of the bridge, unable to complete it, asked the devil for help, which in turn asked the soul of the first living being that had passed over it.
When the bridge was over, the builder made a dog passed on the bridge, fooling the devil.
There is no historical information on the construction, it is attributed a substantial intervention to Matilde di Canossa in 1101, but there are no certain sources.
In 1526, on the left bank, was built a hermitage dedicated to the Maddalena, now disappeared, also to reduce the diabolic attribution in a period of ferocious inquisition, from which the bridge took one of its names.
The bridge is visited by many tourists and curious, and every year on October 31 is organized a big night Halloween party that has the bridge as a protagonist and that attracts thousands of participants.
